The following commentary about Abdication Crisis, 1936 in the Churchill Era is produced by the Churchill College (Cambridge): Constitutional crisis caused by King Edward VIII’s decision to marry the twice-divorced American, Wallis Simpson, despite the Government’s refusal to accept her. Rather than give Mrs Simpson up, the King abdicated, becoming the Duke of Windsor, and was succeeded on the throne by his younger brother, as King George VI.
