Definition of Distress For Rent
In accordance with the work A Dictionary of Law, this is a description of Distress For Rent : The seizing of a tenant’s goods by the landlord to secure payment of rent arrears. If the tenant fails to pay the rent arrears after distress has been levied, the landlord may sell the goods and keep the amount due. In the case of an *assured, *protected, or *statutory tenancy the landlord must obtain a court’s permission before levying distress. In 1986 the *Law Commission recommended abolition of distress.
