Documentary Evidence in United Kingdom

Definition of Documentary Evidence

In accordance with the work A Dictionary of Law, this is a description of Documentary Evidence : Evidence in written rather than oral form. The admissibility of a document depends upon (1) proof of the authenticity of the document and (2) the purpose for which it is being offered in evidence. If it is being offered to prove the truth of some matter stated in the document itself it will be necessary to consider the application of the rule against hearsay (See hearsay evidence) and its many exceptions.
