Equality of Opportunity

Equality of Opportunity in United Kingdom

Equality of opportunity in the Context of Equality Law

The meaning of Equality of opportunity, published by the Equality and Diversity Forum (a United Kindom network of equality and human rights organisations), is the following: means everyone having an equal opportunity to achieve their full potential, free from any artificial barriers, such as prejudice or a failure to respond to specific needs or failure to tackle entrenched disadvantage. It does not mean that everyone has to be treated the same. To have due regard to the need to advance equality of opportunity, public bodies will have to consider the need to: _ remove or minimise disadvantages experienced by people because of their protected characteristics; _ take steps to meet the needs of people with protected characteristics; and _ encourage people with protected characteristics to participate in public life.
