Concept of Eyre

Traditional meaning of eyre [1] in the English common law history: A way, or journey; the journey of a justice about his circuit; see ASSIZE. The Justices in eyre were established in 1176 with a delegated power from the aula regia, and made their circuit around the kingdom once in seven years for the purpose of trying various causes; they were superseded by the justices of ASSIZE and NISI PRIUS (see this last concept in this legal reference), [rtbs name=”history-of-english-law”]
