Coleridge John Duke 1st Baron Coleridge

John Duke Coleridge (1820-1897), British jurist, eldest son of the jurist Sir John Taylor Coleridge, born in Ottery Saint Mary, and educated at the University of Oxford. He began practicing law in 1846 and was elected to Parliament in 1865. Three years later he was appointed solicitor general and in 1871 became attorney general. He was appointed chief justice of the Court of Common Pleas in 1873, was raised to the peerage as Baron Coleridge in 1874, and was chief justice of the Court of the Queen’s Bench from 1880 to 1894.
