Police and Crime Commissioners

Police and Crime Commissioners (PCC) in United Kingdom

“In 2012, the UK Government was planning to encourage a stronger local input into policing by creating directly elected commissioners known as police and crime commissioners (PCC). Statutory provisions for their establishment are contained in the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011 which have been brought into force, though the relevant elections have not yet been held. In London the equivalent role is fulfilled by the London Mayor. Under s. 1(2) the core functions of the PCC are to secure the maintenance of an efficient and effective police force and to hold the Chief Constable to account. Local police authorities which have up to now fulfilled this role, will be abolished. The PCC is able to set police force budgets, determine policing priorities and appoint (and, if necessary, fire) the Chief Constable.”
