Definition of First Offender

In accordance with the work A Dictionary of Law, this is a description of First Offender : A person with no previous conviction by a criminal court. A court of summary jurisdiction (See magistrates’ court) is not empowered to send a person to prison for a first offence, unless it is satisfied that there is no other appropriate method of dealing with that person.
