Confidence Motion in United Kingdom

Confidence motion Meaning, as used in the UK Parliament

A motion of no confidence, or censure motion, is a motion moved in the House of Commons with the wording: ‘That this House has no confidence in Her Majesty’s Government’. If such a motion is agreed to, and a new government with the support of a majority of Members of the Parliament cannot be formed within a period of 14 calendar days, Parliament is dissolved and an early General Election is triggered.

A motion of no confidence is one of only two ways in which an early General Election may be triggered under the terms of the Fixed Term Parliaments Act 2011.
