Definition of Ex Officio Magistrate

In accordance with the work A Dictionary of Law, this is a description of Ex Officio Magistrate : A magistrate by virtue of holding some other office, usually that of mayor of a city or borough. Most ex officio magistrateships were abolished by the Justices of the Peace Act 1968 and the Administration of Justice Act 1973, but High Court judges are justices of the peace ex officio for the whole of England and Wales and the Lord Mayor and aldermen are justices ex officio for the City of London.
